Can Vettel's competitors capitalise of rule changes in the 2014 season?
According to a lot of experts in the sport of Formula 1, the winning streak of Sebastian Vettel (on the way to his fourth consecutive driver's championship) could end, when new rules for the engineering of the cars come into action.
Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull has been the best car, which outran the competition of Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Lotus by far and in a consistent way. Nevertheless, the sporting director of McLaren, Sam Michael is confident that the rule changes may lead to a new order and make the driver's championship more exciting again.
"When you get a big rule change the engineering structures are not fast enough to respond, even if you're given two or three years to design cars for 2014."
(Sam Michael, Sporting Director of McLaren F1)
The engines in the formula one are changed from 2.4 litre into 1.6 litre turbocharged V6 engines, while aerodynamics and energy systems are also changing.
My Opinion
For me it is obvious that the Formula 1 has to do something about the current situation. It has proven throughout the history of the sport, that changes within the engineering rules are the most suitable tool to make both, the driver's and engineering championship, more exciting. Regardless of the major changes, I highly doubt that a well-managed team like Red Bull with arguably one of the best drivers of all time is suddenly going to fall far behind. These kinds of rule changes are business as usual within the Formula 1 and occur every other decade, especially when a team starts to dominate too much.
